8 March Centennial

Against Political Islam, for Secularism

In Solidarity with Imprisoned Iranian activists

In commemoration of 8 March centennial, OWL is organising a conference against religious and traditional misogynist practices. Violence against women justified by defenence of family’s honour, forced marriages and imposition of veil on underage girls are only a few brutal examples of such practices. In the light of Islamist movement’s offensive on women’s rights and lives, not only in counties under the rule of Islam but also in the west, and a global campaign to promote Shalria law, OWL feels the urgent need to mobilize a global force to counter attack political Islam and promote secularism in order to safeguard women’s rights and saftey. Secularism is an important pillar of a society free of mysoginism. This conference is a step towards this goal.

Veteran women’s rights activists, secularists, experts in socio-therapeutical work, aiding victims of violence, and artists are coming together to make a memorable evening in defence of women’s rights and secularism, and against political islam, Islamist offensive and new wave of religious surge.

OWL will also like to use this important occasion to bring to the attention of the world the lot of many imprisoned opposition activists in Iran, among them women’s right actvists, labour and student activists. A well-known Iranian poet and playwright, who has launched an important campaign to free student activists is invited to read some of his poems.

Come and join us to celeberate 8 March centennial together and join force to push back religious offensive and build an international secularist movement for women rights and a better world.

The conference will be in English, Swedish and Persian.

SEPTEMBER 8TH

 SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DEMONSTRATION

against  SHARIA COURT IN CANADA

for  WOMEN’S RIGHTS, SECULARISM AND HUMAN DIGNITY

It has been a year since the International Campaign against Sharia Court in Canada, called for

a day of protest, nationally and internationally, against faith based courts in Ontario. The protestors

wanted the Ontario to remove family law  from the 1991 Arbitration Act.

The Campaign worked hard to inform the general public and the ministries in charge about

the high risks of permitting Sharia courts in Ontario.

Unfortunately, despite all the warnings, the government of Ontario has not  taken a clear position

to  prevent the interference of religious institutions in  the judicial system.

The Second International Demonstration opposing Sharia and all faith based courts in Ontario

will be held on September 8th, 2005.

Speech at Panel Discussion on Separation of religion from State at the University of Toronto 's Faculty of Law

 November 4th, 2004

I should that say on the one hand  it is regrettable that at the  beginning of the twenty first century we still have to deal with the ancient debate about the separation of religion from the state. I said 'the ancient debate' because centuries ago religion and its industries' influence had been defeated in a great confrontation.

Speech at METRAC (Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children) on “Emerging Issues in Women’s Equality –A look at Sharia Law”

I’d like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be among you today.  Gatherings like this provide an opportunity to discuss the obstacles women face in order to achieve equality. I’d like to present a true picture of the situation that women and children face in the so called Muslim communities. I will then highlight the need for the total separation of religion from the State as a precondition of women’s liberation in these communities.

I am very confident that gatherings such as this one will make powerful contributions to the struggle for women’s freedom by raising the profile of women’s rights.  Such events draw attention to the urgent need for actions relating to ensuring the total equality of the sexes,  to secularism, and towards the establishment of a society where all people are free and equal regardless of  gender, race, nationality or country of origin.
