8 March Centennial

Against Political Islam, for Secularism

In Solidarity with Imprisoned Iranian activists

In commemoration of 8 March centennial, OWL is organising a conference against religious and traditional misogynist practices. Violence against women justified by defenence of family’s honour, forced marriages and imposition of veil on underage girls are only a few brutal examples of such practices. In the light of Islamist movement’s offensive on women’s rights and lives, not only in counties under the rule of Islam but also in the west, and a global campaign to promote Shalria law, OWL feels the urgent need to mobilize a global force to counter attack political Islam and promote secularism in order to safeguard women’s rights and saftey. Secularism is an important pillar of a society free of mysoginism. This conference is a step towards this goal.

Veteran women’s rights activists, secularists, experts in socio-therapeutical work, aiding victims of violence, and artists are coming together to make a memorable evening in defence of women’s rights and secularism, and against political islam, Islamist offensive and new wave of religious surge.

OWL will also like to use this important occasion to bring to the attention of the world the lot of many imprisoned opposition activists in Iran, among them women’s right actvists, labour and student activists. A well-known Iranian poet and playwright, who has launched an important campaign to free student activists is invited to read some of his poems.

Come and join us to celeberate 8 March centennial together and join force to push back religious offensive and build an international secularist movement for women rights and a better world.

The conference will be in English, Swedish and Persian.

SEPTEMBER 8TH

 SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DEMONSTRATION

against  SHARIA COURT IN CANADA

for  WOMEN’S RIGHTS, SECULARISM AND HUMAN DIGNITY

It has been a year since the International Campaign against Sharia Court in Canada, called for

a day of protest, nationally and internationally, against faith based courts in Ontario. The protestors

wanted the Ontario to remove family law  from the 1991 Arbitration Act.

The Campaign worked hard to inform the general public and the ministries in charge about

the high risks of permitting Sharia courts in Ontario.

Unfortunately, despite all the warnings, the government of Ontario has not  taken a clear position

to  prevent the interference of religious institutions in  the judicial system.

The Second International Demonstration opposing Sharia and all faith based courts in Ontario

will be held on September 8th, 2005.

I should that say on the one hand  it is regrettable that at the  beginning of the twenty first century we still have to deal with the ancient debate about the separation of religion from the state. I said 'the ancient debate' because centuries ago religion and its industries' influence had been defeated in a great confrontation.

I’d like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be among you today.  Gatherings like this provide an opportunity to discuss the obstacles women face in order to achieve equality. I’d like to present a true picture of the situation that women and children face in the so called Muslim communities. I will then highlight the need for the total separation of religion from the State as a precondition of women’s liberation in these communities.

Report of September 8th Demonstrations Against Sharia Court in Canada

Protests were held in six cities of Canada , Toronto , Ottawa , Mountrail, Surrey ,   Penticton , Vancouver , Victoria on September 8th. They were part of an international demonstration taking place on the same day in, Sweden , Germany , England and Amsterdam .

The protestors sent a clear message to the Canadian Government that they do not want Sharia law in Ontario . They gathered to voice their opposition and to demand the separation of religion and the state.

Support for the movement is spreading to the mainstream of Canadian society. Various speakers voiced their concern and support, including a concerned group of 250 retirees from Collingwood Ontario .

In response to protestors, B.C. Attorney –General Geoff  Plant said  that he will not allow Islamic Shariah Law to arbitrate disputs involving marriage, divorce, inheritance or other covil matters in British Columbia law. Unfortunately, the Ontario government has not made a similar response.

Over 5000 people have signed the petition “To End Sharia Courts in Canada and over 100 new names are added each day. The petition can be found at www.nosharia.com.

Media reporting the demonstration included the Vancouver Sun, CBC radio and TV, OMNI TV, CTV TV;  the Elaph Arabic newspaper,  the Globe and Mail, TVO, TVAzadi Zan and Calgary radio. Present in Toronto also was a documentary producer and the full event was recorded by her crew.

The Ontario government plans to release their report on religion based Arbitration by September 30th.

This act allows family disputes to be resolved outside of court by arbitrators according to their own religious and cultural beliefs. This act allows Islamic groups to legalize the suppression of women by implementing the proposed Sharia Court .

A Report on June 26 public meeting, By Robert Simpson

Iran Named as Sponsor of Sharia Law Movement in Canada

Toronto, Canada, June 26, 2004  -  Ms. Homa Arjomand who escaped Iran in 1989 on horseback through the mountains, claims that Iran is sponsoring the spread of Sharia in Canada and around the world.

Homa's campaign against Sharia law is primarily to protect the rights of women and children in Canada. The group is challenging the 1991, Ontario Arbitration Act that encourages legal pluralism. The arbitration act permits Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Native communities to use their religious laws to mediate family and community disputes.

From her counseling experience, Homa explained that the cultural pressures and limited English language skills of women and children living in isolated religious communities discourages them from knowing, understanding and using their rights as protected in the Canadian Charter. She believes the Ontario government's endorsement of Sharia law will enable religious leaders to further isolate the vulnerable and therefore increase the number of victims of physical and emotional abuse.More...
