My condolences go out to all defenders of Human Rights, women’s rights, social activists, Friends and Family of June Callwood

Please accept my deepest and warmest sympathy for the immeasurable loss. The loss of June Callwood, the remarkable journalist, writer, social activist and defender of women’s rights and gay’s rights, will have an eminent effect on the human rights movement. The Secular movement has certainly lost one of its passionate activists.

June Callwood appreciated life immensely and through her work and the structure of various organizations and campaigns, she managed to touch the lives of many people. She was directly involved in founding in PEN Canada, the Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation, Casey House the Toronto AID’s hospice, Digger House hostels for homeless youth,, Nellie’s Hostel shelter for abused women and continued to be active on the Campaign to end Child Poverty. Her active role in the International Campaign against Sharia Court in Canada certainly strengthened the secular movement and added a very strong voice to end Faith Based Arbitration in Ontario.

June Callwood died peacefully on Saturday, April 14th,2007 at the age of 82 after a long battle with Cancer. She died beloved by many people in Canada and across the world.

It is with sorrow that we say good bye to June Callwood; however, with great enthusiasm that we remember her.
